The last nomads 4 x 52'
Ethnology2002

“THE LAST NOMADS” is a documentary series of four 52-minute episodes, exploring a way of life which is now coming to an end.

Nomads have existed in all five continents since time immemorial. Some studies date the appearance of the first travelling ethnic groups to the end of the Neolithic period. The word nomad evokes simply movement from one place to another, and includes hunters, gatherers, itinerant farmers, fugitives, traders, etc. However, the term originally referred to those who travelled from one place to another in search of pasture for their cattle. There are groups, such as the little-known Tsaatan, in northern Mongolia, who move camp up to eight times a year.

Nomadism is often seen as a bucolic way of life, independent and in contact with nature, symbolising everything our “civilisation” denies us. But the governments of the different countries in which nomads live do not share this vision. Nomads are a problem. They move as they wish. They recognise neither authority nor borders. They travel where they have always travelled, from generation to generation, and understand no other law than their own ancestral codes.

The fact is nomads are now increasingly adopting sedentary lifestyles. There are fewer and fewer of them. Before long, there will quite simply be no nomads left in the world, it is a disappearing lifestyle. This documentary series is therefore timely, and will show us what the last nomadic groups in the world are like and where they live.

Unlike other documentaries of cultural anthropology, we do not dedicate each episode to a specific group. Rather, each documentary focuses on one of four climatic regions. The climate is a decisive factor in the way of life of the different groups. In this way, we give a global vision of current-day nomads, but avoiding unnecessary repetition, as what really determines their lives and customs is the natural environment in which they live.

We will be introduced into each group through one or more families. We will learn their names and the relationships between them. We will travel with them. We will see how they set up and dismount their camps. We will attend their main celebrations. We will learn of their beliefs. And they will explain the answers they have found to the eternal questions, which since the beginning of time human beings have asked, wherever on the planet they live.

Our cameras will be their means of expression, to explain to settled peoples the reasons for their nomadic existence.

We will learn of their concerns, and how they conceive the world. Beyond the label of indomitable and warlike which is how they have always been presented, we will discover that their free existence has strengthened their sense of unity. Carrying your house on your back does not mean a rootless existence, rather it makes everyone fight for the cohesion of the group and feelings such as love are much more intense.

Viewers will not only know that a given nomad is a Buriat or a Pygmy and that he or she lives in Mongolia or Cameroon, but will also learn their names and those of their children. And when viewers remember the series they will also remember that many thousands of kilometres from their homes, these people exist. Places as remote and unknown as Siberia or the jungles of Cameroon are now not quite so far away, because their friends from the series will be there.
